Dear friends:

I wanted to share with you my experience in sawing my Lendal paddle
blade. (Lendal paddles are the only high-end paddles available here in
Israel.)

I had purchased a Lendal Nordkapp (carbon-nylon 12), a fairly wide blade,
which is the most popular blade here in Israel. But I was a slow paddler,
and I also developed pain in my forearms on long paddles. After paddling
with a Lendal Archipelago, a narrower blade, the pain was less and my speed
picked up (but I'm still slower than a lot of my buddies).

When Nigel Dennis was here he mentioned that it was possible to saw the
blade and make it narrower. I thought this was the solution for me (not
wanting at the time to buy a new paddle).

Now, I'm not the tinkering type and was scared to death of doing this
myself. But my friend Eran, a carpenter and a paddler, agreed to do it. I
gave him my Nordkapp and a friend's Archipelago to serve as a template, and
he did an incredible job. it is an exact copy of the Archipelago, and
paddles beautifully.

I'm not sure this can be done with all materials (probably not fiberglass).

BTW, Nigel will be coming to Israel next month for some paddling workshops,
and he is bringing a kayak surfing instructor as well. Cool!

Josh
(Still paddling here, although the temperature is dropping).

Another option is to remove the Nordkapp blades and replace with
Archipelago's. I have done exactly that! Use boiling water to soften up
the epoxy holding the blades and pop in new ones! You can select your
own feather angle. I have also converted a Lendal paddle from a one
piece to two piece. It really quite easy.

And where do you get the fittings/inserts for a one to two piece conversion?

They are available from Great River, the Lendal importers.

You are a braver man than I, Bob!

I always admired people who could change their own oil, tune up a car, put
their folding kayak together...

I don't change my own oil! So who do you hire to assemble your folding
kayak?
