G'day Sid and Paddlewise I've used the paddlefloat in 1+ foot chop but find that assisted rescues or paddlefloat assisted reentry and roll are faster and easier. In fact the NSWSKC allowed a paddlefloat assisted reentry and roll as a self rescue method in place of the conventional paddlefloat reentry during my sea proficiency exam. A nice thing about a paddlefloat assisted reentry and roll is that the boat can be stabilised by the "outrigger" while pumping out. An awkward aspect is the time it takes to remove the paddlefloat which although not long can be a hazard in rough water. I find it best to only partially inflate the float makes it easier to position during the roll - a matter for experimentation and definitely requires practise.
