It can depend on how much polution and plant matial are in the water. I live beside the St. Lawrence River, where a few years ago you couldn't see the bottom when the water was much over a metre (3 feet) deep. A few years ago some nasty little creatures from Europe, called zebra mussels, were dumped into the Great Lakes. These have migrated down the river. There are millions and millions of these little guys and they end up filtering the water and now we can see the bottom at 20 metres.
