Hello All, IMHO edging changes the configuration of the hull (more rocker). Turns are biased by the inherent momentum of the boat as well as other subleties (lean, etc.) The purpose of the training exercise where one learns to paddle in a straight line while holding the boat on one edge is to develop muscular control. I find the exercise to be very useful. It is also of interest to note that one may, while holding the boat on one side, turn either left or right by the use of the appropriate sweep strokes (the strokes do not have to be full- just enough to alter the momentum). There is a difference in the quality of the turns, however. The so-called off-side edged turn is sharper and slows the boat far more than the on-side edge turn.
