G'Day Scot, Thanks for the very clear description of your observations. Why the boat turns more easily on edge has been explained. But why it turns without some kind of paddle sweep is difficult! If I read correctly when a knee is lifted some boats turn to the left, others to the right and some not at all. As you say the asymmetry of the hull (bow to stern) sounds like the cause but I have to join the ranks of the puzzled and will wait for someone to provide a reference if available - its starting to sound as though some applied math or a really good analogy is required!
