My understanding is that VHF radios are for marine use only. In that case, using it in your car might get you in trouble. We use Icoms, one powered by AA batteries and one rechargeable. I like the AA model better, because recharging is a hassle in foreign countries. While the rechargeable is billed as waterproof, any prudent paddler will keep it in a waterproof sleeve anyway, so it has little advantage. Plus, you'll destroy the battery on recharge if you're not careful, and you have no way of knowing when to think about recharging. By the time the low power indicator flashes, it's a little late.
