[Paddlewise] Ignorance

G'day

The first time I even thought about cold water was on a visit to Washington
in early spring when looking to see if the Canoe hire shop at the Potomac
was open - it wasn't! At that time I hadn't joined Paddlewise. The
possibility of ignorance/stupidity are ever present when entering a new
environment.

How does someone starting out become aware of hazards - For me the answer
was finding well advertised clubs with experienced members and well
developed codes of practise - and of course access to discussion groups such
as Paddlewise. If the shops selling/hiring kayaks could refer people to such
clubs it would be a good start.

(Paddling tonight in Sydney, where the water this time of year is about 20
centigrade!)
