My understanding is that VHF radios are for marine use only. In that
case, using it in your car might get you in trouble.
We use Icoms, one powered by AA batteries and one rechargeable. I like
the AA model better, because recharging is a hassle in foreign countries.
While the rechargeable is billed as waterproof, any prudent paddler will keep
it in a waterproof sleeve anyway, so it has little advantage. Plus, you'll
destroy the battery on recharge if you're not careful, and you have no way of
knowing when to think about recharging. By the time the low power indicator
flashes, it's a little late.
Remember that while these handhelds with rubber ducky antennas will pick
up transmissions from afar, but won't send more than a few miles.

subject: [Paddlewise] Waldo Lake decision announced
Date: Fri, 7 Dec 2001 12:34:32 -0800
I thought you Pacific North west folks might be interested. The decision
for Waldo lake has been signed and they have decided to allow electric
motors only. This is the second largest lake in Oregon covering 10 square
miles. The lake is one of the purest in the United States with 125 feet of
visbility. If you want to see the pictures here is a link
http://www.efn.org/~k_mccree/WaldoLk.html
This is copied from the press release. "Briefly, this alternative: assigns
a “semi-primitive, non-motorized” Recreation Opportunity Spectrum (ROS)
classification to the lake surface; restricts boat motors to electric
motors-only, after a five year transition period; initiates a three-phase
strategy to limit expansion of dispersed camp sites around the lake; and
allows the issuance of new recreation special use permits at the lake only
if they meet a strict set of criteria.

Copies of the Decision Notice and Environmental Assessment can be acquired
off the Willamette National Forest’s website
(www.fs.fed.us/r6/willamette/mgmt/waldo)"
In addition the forest recieved $250,000 from Congress to do a water quality
study (I know because I work on the forest). I suspect the some of the motor
boat enthusiasts will appeal this decision.

Great news that a lake this size will eventually only be available for
electric motors, sails and paddles. -- MZ
