Why is the water so clear in some places but not in others?

It can depend on how much polution and plant matial are in the
water. I live beside the St. Lawrence River, where a few years
ago you couldn't see the bottom when the water was much over a
metre (3 feet) deep. A few years ago some nasty little creatures
from Europe, called zebra mussels, were dumped into the Great
Lakes. These have migrated down the river. There are millions
and millions of these little guys and they end up filtering the
water and now we can see the bottom at 20 metres.
