I remember, not too many yrs ago, buying a Keowee II (big stable rec kayak) and taking the wife and two small children out to the reservoir for the maiden voyage. It was our first kayak. We piled in, secure in the fact that we all were wearing our new PFDs. The fact that it was March and the water was cold never entered our minds. We paddle out to an island and back. A one way distance of about 1 mile. Had we tipped we never would have been seen or heard. Its a bit quite out there at that time of yr. It still sickens me when I think of the danger I placed my kids in concerning hypothermia. Never again.
