[Paddlewise] nomenclature

I am writing you, Dr. Inverbon, to apologize for my gross misunderstanding of
the erudite, if abstruse, expressions of your scribe, John.  As a paddlewise
neophyte, how could I possibly know that I would be gifted with the
opportunity of worshiping at the feet of one with your inestimable
Anthropological wisdom?  Not comprehending the true humility demanded of my
lowly position, I have spoken in error and beg your forbearance.  My knowledge
of  all matters nautical is non-existent--no--it begs definition in negative
numbers!  Please accept the most sincere apologies of one of such limited
comprehension.  My feelings about myself, today, can only be described as
scatological.
