This happens in the UK too, but round here it's nearly always a dog
owner who gets drowned.

Pooch goes on ice.
Owner tries to retrieve pooch
<crack>
Owner drowns
Pooch survives.

The mutt _never_ drowns !  If I ever had a boat, I wouldn't fit it
with lifebelts, I'd hang labradors off the rails.
