[Paddlewise] Key Largo Lodging

I'm starting to get back channel requests for Florida paddling/lodging info and am delighted to report that my favorite little Key Largo motel now has a website with lots of photos.

Their double room rates are still $55/night (these fill up very quickly in a place where American Outdoors campground charges about the same), and $80 for a 2 bed efficiency. I'm assuming their "suites" are still $109 or $115 or thereabouts.

Everyone I've sent there has been very happy, especially my English cousins who I "forced" to cancel their HoJo (or whatever it was) $150/night reservation in a sterile environment for what I describe as "conch charm at its best." It's not fancy, but it certainly captures the Keys ambiance.

They have a neat logo/design/picture on their Ts/tanks/nightshirts...There's a really nice (but not too pricey) restaurant right next door. The Quay is also a lovely restaurant with bayside/sunset happy hour. The Fish House is also popular.

the URL is www.hungrypelican.com and the phone number is 305-451-3576

Florida Bay Outfitters (www.kayakfloridakeys.com) is holding the Bogey and Bacall race on the weekend of Feb. 9 and 10 (no single rooms available at the HP for that weekend, think they still have 3 $80/rooms tho).

FBO also rents kayaks and camping gear and are the "sponsors" of Paradise Paddlers. You could email Monica and ask if there are any PP paddles you could join. Mention Paddlewise and (gulp) my name!

No affiliation, of course.

BTW, the absolute best camping book around is the fairly new Florida Camping Guide put out by Foghorn Press. Jonny Molloy has a book called the Best Tent Camping in Florida, and the Best Coastal Camping, plus the Paddler's Guide to Paddling the Everglades. Then there's Nigel Foster's excellent paddling book. Can't remember exact title, but it's something no-brainer like Paddling in South Florida.

Paddling in the Sunshine State is another new book.
