Rick, Spring for the more advanced if you possibly can. I have on old Lowrance basic unit that does most of the same things as the basic Etrex and also an Etrex Legend. The Legend contains maps of the US that have all of the NAVAIDS on it. I also have Mapsource maps which show the coastline in pretty good detail as well as all of the harbors. Navigation is *MUCH* easier when you can actually see where you are and not have to then translate it back to the paper chart each time you look at the GPS. BTW, I have checked out the submersability of Garmin's unit by going for a swim in the surf. I rinsed it in fresh water and it works fine. I now put it in a baggy for surf launches and landings, but otherwise take it out and just keep it in the pocket of my PFD.
