I would recommend a double with a good partner to more unstable/serious situations. From the front seat one gets good view and the partner can take care of the direction & watch for the approaching waves. You can have hands free also for a longer period. I will also have to agree with David about the rudder part, though I am using both my single (Nordkapp) and the double to photography.
