My!  Look at all the definitions of planing that have surfaced.  :-)

Clearly from this discussion we now know that:

Planing is when there is:  a discontinuity in the speed curve, when the CG
rises (by how much and why is unclear), when the speed/length ratio is above
X or between X and Y (seesm to vary),  when there is a flat wake aft with a
rooster tail,  when you feel it, or when you just know it is happening, or
etc. etc. etc.

I will gently withdraw from this discussion and leave Paddlewise members to
agree on a definition after which I will forward it to the Technical
Committee of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineeers. I know
they will appreciate it.
