wrong, wrong on this one...<

Maybe you are right, maybe not. My experience with surfing kayaks is the
couple knot kick that virtually EVERYONE who has ever paddled a sea kayak
down wind and waves experiences, along with some interesting and sometimes
scary shots at surfing onto beaches in small waves ( 1-2 ft swells, lumping
up to 2-3 ft as they hit the beach and break), and some very scary times
with large fishboat wakes.

At no time was my boat planing on these waves. The increase in speed was
substantial, up to double in some cases. Paddling is necessary to stay on
the wave, or to catch the one behind as the first one rolls through.

I would suggest that folks like yourself and Kevin Whilden, who can truly
speak to the issue of planing their kayaks while surfng, are in the
minority. Most of us can only dream of having the skills, guts and
opportunity to do so.

Rob.

Rob,

See, I got you again 'cause you're wrong on this one too.

Anyone who knows me will readily attest to the incontrovertible _fact_ that
I am unathletic, unskilled and basically a coward...

Opportunity is the big one. I can be on Puget Sound geared up and paddling
my touring boat in 45min and on an excellent whitewater run in 35min in the
opposite direction. Unfortunately, neither of these have sunk their hooks
into me like surfing so I have to drive a _minimum_ of 100 miles one way to
the closest break. I shouldn't complain, after all I could be stuck in
Kansas or somewhere equally hellish ;->

Still, may be it's for the best. With my obsessive personality, if I lived
on the NorCal coast or some such place, I'd probably be athletic, skilled,
full of guts and...

...unemployed, broke, divorced, and so on and on.

Best,

Thomas
