In my earliest days of paddling I raced with the long-gone American Indian
Center of Chicago Canoe Club. On a family outing on the Fox River in
Illinois I had to swim for a whole afternoon because the group left me at
the lunch stop. I swam fast enough to catch the slowest canoes but no one
would give me a ride. Weird sense of humor! It did teach me that warm
water swimming isn't so bad even if it lasts for four hours. And I never
got a cramp from swimming after eating.
