Jim, I went to Glacier Bay a few years ago, and like you, was in awe of the area. I went to the west arm and found some very accessible glaciers as well as some relatively undisturbed inlets. Should you consider the west arm, the cruise ship traffic will have to be contended with. It's not just the crossing of the bays, but the wakes that make launching and landing contentious. I can imagine a couple of "South Park" types unloading a boat as a 3 foot wake hits shore! I'm sure you'll be a fine coach. Bears. My wife and I saw a Discovery Channel type wandering around the Scidmmore bay area, just south of west arm. Very big brown bear and very in control of his environment. Therefore, a weenie roast would probably not be advised. The Johns Hopkins inlet is also reknowned for the quantity of bear activity so be advised.
