Free standing tents stay up by having their pole sprung into place under
tension.  You can pick one up in the air and it will not collapse (well not
much, anyway).  Think geodesic dome.

Not-free standing means that the tent stays up only as long as the guy ropes
stay put and the corners stay pegged down.  Picture a pup tent.
