Hi UK,

Franco Ferrero wrote a good book "long distance kayaking" or named similar.
There may some help inside.

Hannes Lindemann was in a folding kayak (on his 2nd trip), got place for
rest and sleep.
One of his MAIN parts on the "trip" was the use of "autogenic training" (AT)
to be able to relaxe in a fast and deep way. Also he "programmed" with AT
the phrases "Go west" and "you reach it" (or so...) to himself.
In his book and also in a snail mail from himself to George (and me) he
point out one of the main problems on every long distance (long time)
kayaking. The ability to sit still for long time without getting problems
with your "sitting flesh". With AT he was able to arrive the carribian sea
WITHOUT ANY problems on his backside. Dr. Hannes Lindemanns web site is
www.autogen.de (only on german, I think), but there you could get in contact
with him,
maybe he can give you some help...

I heard from a german man, paddling a huge Lettmann Single without bulkhead
in the front. For night or resting, he slips completely inside the
(laminate) kayak and lay down. Mh...... donīt know if this woul dbe ideal
when the wrong wave hits him.

With more than one boat, you can build kind of floating ponton, so resting
might be quite easy for you.

When George and me tried to paddle across whole north sea last August, we
had planned to recover in our Aleut Sea II Double WHILE the other one keep
paddling. The plan was, blowing up a 20 litre paddle float and lay with the
body on it, while we keep sitting in our normal way (you need a good seat
for that). Lay on the float and grab some bungees with your hands and
recover.
BUT while the other one was still paddling and there hadnīt been other
Outrigger-Floats the problems was my body slipped away by every small wave
and
the kayak was heeling over a little bit. So you awake to correct the
heeling.
It might had been better to set out 2-4 fixed paddles with floats (fixed
with strong bungees to the foredeck), so both paddlers could recover. Ne
heeling over, better for relaxing, less average speed aso...
Eh, we had to quite our tour after 16 hours, because I became kind of sea
sick :-(( after first breakfast (maybe wrong food or to much under stress or
something else, ti doesnīt matter any more).

BTW, our tour would had go for about 300 nm and our timetable said 3-5 days.
I guess your 4 days for 180nm are the maximum amount of needed time in worst
case? OK, depends on
the circumstances and the boats. Which one do you going to take?

all the best and stay alive
Jochen
