For a waterway that takes stormwater from roads, and gets a lot of consumer garbage into it, the Yarra supports a surprising range of wildlife. I've seen Nankeen night herons, long necked tortoises, darters, purple swamp hens, azure kingfishers, coots, white-faced herons, king parrots, and platypus, twice. One of the best things about paddling is the wildlife.
