From: "Peter Schwegler" <psr_at_principaal.nl> > Is it not dangerous to get entangled in a paddleleash? There are cases where any leash can be dangerous. However, in some cases the risk of not leashing is greater. I wouldn't use a leash in surf, where the paddle can become a danger by trashing you while the wave trashes you, you kayak and the paddle. However, a leash can keep the paddle attached to the kayak in most circumstances and this may have helped Steve. I don't like most commercial leashes because they don't release easily (or at all with some brands). I have made my own and they have a quick release at both the paddle shaft and kayak ends. I've put some details on my web site: http://members.rogers.com/michaeldaly2/summerPage.htm The link is on the bottom of this page.
