Job Description:
Executive Director
Northern Forest Canoe Trail
 2002

The 740-mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail is the largest inland water
trail in the Northeastern United States. It follows historic Native
American canoe routes linking the Adirondacks with northern Maine,
serving as a living reminder of the heritage of the Northern Forest area
and its people, while also providing recreational users access to these
waters. The objective of the NFCT is to create a trail managed and
maintained by local communities along the route, as well as to tell the
rich historical and cultural stories of Northern New England, where
rivers were once the highways of communication.

The Executive Director of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail will provide
added vision and leadership for the NFCT. In partnership with the Board
of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the legal and
financial health of the organization, as well as its role in the
conservation community at large. The Executive Director will manage the
daily operation of the NFCT to ensure that the organization meets its
commitments to its members and the communities through which it passes.

Specific tasks and responsibilities of the Executive Director include:

^Õ Vision and Leadership. Lead the NFCT organization to create a model
water trail with active local community involvement, utilizing strong
stewardship and environmental principles. Guide Board and organization
in long-term strategic planning, as well as annual organizational
planning.

The first goal of the NFCT is to ensure that the trail is passable for
its entire length. The Executive Director will be in charge of planning
and directing this effort, while preparing to expand educational and
other opportunities for the NFCT to assist its host communities once the
physical trail is completed.

^Õ Raising Funds. Lead the fundraising effort: research and cultivate
potential funding sources, develop and implement strategies for donor
solicitation, write foundation grants, solicit corporate support, work
with Congressional contacts, monitor donor activity and trends, and
acknowledge donors. Work with Board or other partners when necessary.

^Õ Marketing the NFCT. Communicate the NFCT mission, stewardship
programs, and financial needs to media, political operatives, members,
donors, landowners, state and federal agencies, local communities,
recreation and conservation organizations, and other stakeholders.

^Õ External Relations. Develop networks and maintain ongoing relations
and communications with recreational trail users, landowners, members and
donors, and the local communities.

^Õ Financial Oversight. Develop and manage an annual budget in concert
with the Board of Directors.

^Õ Staff Support and Management. Supervise and provide necessary support
for staff (need to hire part-time assistant in 2002) and volunteers to
ensure that the business of the NFCT is properly attended to in a timely,
efficient, and professional manner. The Executive Director has the
responsibility for hiring, firing, assessing performance, and resolving
staff conflicts.

^Õ Programs. Policy, planning, and oversight of the NFCT program areas,
including Trail development, usage management, stewardship programs,
publications (including newsletters, sectional maps ),
education/outreach, and membership. Work with State Coordinators, local
community organizations, university partners and the National Park
Service regional staff to execute the yearly program plan throughout the
four-state region.

^Õ Reporting Out. Provide the Board of Directors with accurate and timely
information to support decisions and development. The Executive Director
will supervise the implementation of all Board policies.
