Also in Illinois, my homebuilt boats are assigned a hull number by the DNR when I register them. And no one even asked if taxes were paid on the materials. The mindset mostly derives from bass boats and such, I think, so little details like materials' taxes are not a problem. I have also registered a few boats I bought used from other private parties and sales tax was not an issue there, either. This whole thing is really not as bad as it might sound. But I've worked for the federal government for 27 years, so maybe my threshold for bureaucratic silliness is pretty high. I could tell the story of what I went through trying to register a kayak I bought in Canada [converting sales tax Canadian dollars to sales tax US dollars], but I might have to change the first sentence of this paragraph.
