No, I didn't see the documentary, though I imagine some Somalia's really despise
the US. I don't think it is a discussion for Paddlewise though. I was merely
indicating that I thought the maritime scenery was unexpected (a desert movie)
and rather beautiful (especially juxtaposed to the death and hatred). A number of
publications in the paddling community picked up on this after 9/11, including
comments by the editors at both Sea Kayaker Magazine and Canoe & Kayak Magazine
(i.e. that during troubling times paddlesports provide a venue to showcase man's
better side as well as a wholesome escape for solace and enjoyment -- or
something like that).

As far as Dave Kruger's original post, his mini-book-endorsement was right on. I
actually wrote the Alaskan incident up for Paddlewise a couple of years ago,
based on the article I read in an aviation magazine. It went far beyond the
reader's digest version, from the perspective of the Jay Hawk pilots, and was
relevant to Paddlewise as it demonstrated the benefit of backups and three
dimensional thinking strategies -- all crucial components to an experienced
paddler in difficult straits. I even used the story to educate my daughters in
"life-skills" training that I do with them once a week as part of their
homeschooling. I had promised Jack Martin to post the story when the paraphrasing
was complete, but I deleted the story by accident and didn't want to spend
another 2 days rewriting it. I should have. But we probably need to stay away
from the politics of world hostility and Hollywood misrepresentations, or
whatever the issue is with the documentary, lest Kirk have to take time away from
his paddling to sort us out.
