A second on no trailer unless you need to carry more than two kayaks.
Rooftop is safer for the kayak and less hassle parking, backing, etc.

I have a Yakima rack with rollers on my Subaru. Once you get them tight
enough to not twist they work very well.

On my Volkswagen Jetta I went with the VW rack at about half the cost of a
Thule system. I rejected Yakima because they don't use the structural
attachments that VW provides under the door seal like Thule and VW racks
do.. I'm using pieces cut out of a closed cell camping mattress to pad the
racks. This actually works almost as well as the rollers. The boat slides
on almost as easy, especially when wet. The boat sits almost 4 inches
lower and nothing twists.
