Arthur wrote seeking advice about keeping ones hands warm in cold weather, and mentioned his concern about maintaining a secure grip on his paddle. I have found that an approximately four inch wide piece of the non-slip tread material normally used on steps or walkways, wrapped around the shaft of the paddle works very well with the three types of gloves/pogies that I have. Although this material looks kind of like coarse sandpaper, it is comfortable to grip bare-handed and also keeps even the smooth surface gloves from slipping without having to grasp the shaft any harder than usual. Cut a strip just long enough to cover the circumference of the paddle shaft, peel off its sticky-back protective layer and place it carefully at the place on the shaft where you like to grasp the paddle. And yes, you only need to put it on one end of the paddle! It's an easy, quick fix.
