Everyone's invited to Corpus Christi's PaddleFest the first weekend in
May. Bonus air miles? Fly into Corpus Christi and we can meet your
plane and get you in a rented kayak for 3 days (compliments of Austin
Outdoor Gear & Guidance bringing down rental kayaks as well as new kayaks
to demo). Here are some of the programs lined up by the Corpus Christi
kayakers:

Friday, May 3

1. Free camping at North Beach, Corpus Christi with Corpus Christi Bay
paddle (afternoon or evening)

2. Drive or paddle to downtown Corpus Christi that afternoon or night,
roller-blade, bike, or walk along the Bay through the city, see two Art
Museums and Fountain, Heritage Village Historic Homes, Jazz at night
clubs or bars, eat at downtown restaurants, visit the Shrimp Boat fleet,
sailboat fleet, and Nina Columbus Ship at City Docks, swim at McGee Beach
in downtown Corpus Christi or at North Beach campsite.

3. Other possible side trips:

Aransas River paddle with alligators and other wildlife,

Nueces River paddle through heavy trees and some summer homes.

Saturday, May 4

1. Drive to Padre Island (40 minutes) and camp on Free or Fee beach for
Gulf surfing or protected Laguna Madre paddling, birding, or exploring
large sand dunes.

2. Special side trips from campsite: Shamrock Cove (island in Corpus
Christi Bay with its own cover, inner island, and rookery for
Cranes/Herons.

3. Port Aransas paddle with the Dolphins through various spoil islands
with good birding opportunities.

4. Demo Day on the Gulf to try out a variety of different kayaks provided
by Corpus Christi kayakers, John VanNess from Austin Outdoor Gear and
Guidance, Patti Carothers from South West Paddle Sports in Houston, and
Frank from Wind-n-Wave in Corpus Christi.

5. Evening party at the large home of one of the local kayakers.

Sunday, May 5

1. Special side trips as outlined above.

2. Demo Day on Emerald Cove (public beach in front of Holliday Inn at
downtown Corpus Christi) to try out a variety of different kayaks
provided by Corpus Christi kayakers, John VanNess from Austin Outdoor
Gear and Guidance, Patti Carothers from South West Paddle Sports in
Houston, and Frank from Wind-n-Wave in Corpus Christi.

3. Group BBQ/Picnic at North Beach before groups leave to return to
Austin/Dallas/Ft Worth (everyone bring and prepare their own food).

4. Individual rolling/bracing/edging and turning instruction at North
Beach and/or Emerald Bay (nice sandy shallow protected beaches to
practice).

All we ask is that you let us know early if you plan to attend so we can
guarantee there is a place and a kayak for everyone. Ken Johnson
