In big white water, a whistle can cause a life jacket to unzip and then to
be stripped off a person. Makes the lifejacket kind of useless. ;)

After Bob Volin's recent post I've just taken a run through the Atlantic
Kayak Tours website. Good stuff, worth reading.
I found this remark: "Whistles should not be attached to your PFD zipper."
What can be the thinking here? I have a whistle attached to my zipper (I
mean PFD zipper) and I can use it OK.

A lot of PFD's have fastex buckles, which will keep the vest on you if the
zipper is undone. I sometimes open the zipper on the vest to allow more
ventilation with it still clipped.

Yes, that is true that they have a fastex buckle or a tie cord at the waist.

One of the PFD manufacturers, I can recall which (I was at the Paddlesport
show in NJ yesterday and my head is still spinning at the variety of PFDs
available these days), seems to have a double safety setup. the opening in
the front has an outer flap that has a zipper and an inner flap that has two
or three fastex buckles (one at the top of the opening, one at about the
middle and then the bottom one that may be the waist belt fastex buckle). I
think the idea is that for ventilation you can choose not to use the zipper
and just have the vest connected at those inner flaps with the fasttex
buckles. It certainly is a good backup.
