Any thoughts out there on the Mirage line of sea kayaks from Sydney Australia? I noticed they're available in North America now and was wondering if the 580 is as good a rough water boat as advertised.
Thanx
Rob

G'day Rob,
Its a boat with a good reputation over here although there's much friendly
banter between Australians comparing Aussie boats. The Mirage is very
stable, faster than most for a sea kayak, especially the carbon kevlar
version. Its rudder arrangement and fairly light build might make it
unsuitable for big surf shore dumps unless you are very skilled though this
is probably a controversial statement. It tracks very well, requires a fair
bit of lean to turn without the rudder, rolls easily. Its a good boat for
beginners through to experienced sea kayakers.

Some other Aussie boats are: Pittarak, Nadgee, TLC (or Stingray) and the
Inuit Classic. All of which are very different from each other, have good
reputations and whose relative merits are hotly debated. I do't think theres
much effort to export them as local demand is high and they are mostly made
by small workshops, so its nice to see one being sold overseas.

All the best, PeterO
