Jolie,

My thoughts exactly.

Jolie said:

Geez, I think we're all missing the boat here. We talk about getting
the word out on the street, and I'm trying in my own little way with
the brochure, but it seems we could all be quoted in these articles
rather than the person who "kayaks regularly, but never ventures too
far from shore and always makes sure she is with someone"....and thinks
"it is so easy to get swamped and get into trouble".

I know an interview with one of us wouldn't be as sensational, and
sensational-sells-newspapers, but wouldn't it be nice to read something
like this:

"What a tragic death. It always shocks me when I see kayakers going out
in our cold waters without proper attire," says experienced local
kayaker Jolie Smilowicz, "If this guy had taken a few lessons and
practiced rescue skills, worn his PFD, and worn a wetsuit, he would
probably be with us today."

Call to action, folks! I'm willing to bet that most of us know someone
or know of someone who works for the local paper. Talk to them and tell
them you're always available for an interview if they ever run any
kayak-related stories in the paper, even and especially accident
reports.

I'm not talking about soliciting an interview for the fame and
glory--think of it more as a community service.

Fortunately, one of the feature writers for my local paper is in my
kayaking club..I'll make the first move! :)
