When I learned it, we thought of it as a C shape of the body, hipsnap to C shape facing the other way. It was important that the Last bit of your body out of the water was your head. That can't be the case if your forehead is near the foredeck. Your body must remain perpendicular to the boat. On the other hand, my roll in an open canoe depends on my head being very low and close to the front airbag; otherwise I may continue to roll right back over on the other side....
