I paddle Illinois rivers. Some are fairly deep and can after a rain be fairly swift. On those I wear a PDF without fail. Other rivers and creeks have little current, are no more than (and often much less than) three feet deep, and quite narrow. On a very hot day in mid-summer on such a river or creek I can see no real reason to wear a PDF. If someone can explain to me that there is a real reason to wear a PDF on a river that is warm, two feet deep, forty feet wide, running at perhaps one mile per hour, in 95 degree temperatures I would be glad to hear it. I am not trying to be satiric here--I just do not see the need in such a circumstance, but if those wiser in the sport think there is a good reason, I am willing to learn. When in even moderately swift water, deep water, or cold water, or even on cool day, I wear the PDF.
