I have had pretty good luck tying my helmet to a cord, the other end of which is knotted and tucked under my foam seat. Then I can kick the helmet down to the front of the cockpit, past the footpegs. There is a lot of room down there that is not really being utilized, so the helmet is out of the way, and off of the deck. When I need to retrieve it I simply reel the line in and untie the helmet. I suppose there could be cause for concern about entanglement here, but since the free end is simply tucked under the seat and not actually tied to the boat, if I were to ever get caught in it (which I have never even come close to doing) then the line can simply be pulled out from under the seat with very little effort.
