I'm amused by lots of kayakers, testers, etc., when they report, "oh ya, at least a weekend's worth of gear can go in there, maybe 3 days." It is rarely disclosed what kind of gear exactly goes into their kit, thus not providing the audience with a valuable analytical tool. Well, what's a weekend, you ask? The tester replies: 3 dinty moor cans 2 each 6 packs, a box of cereal and a gallon of milk in a collapsible ice chest with frozen steaks and potatos." Come to find out, all those fresh avocado's, six packs, and cast iron skillets do require a bigger yak. My wife and I go dehydrated on the chow; very light on the tools (no axes, saws, 2 pound sand stakes), and our shelter is a backpacking style tent rather than the Barnum and Bailey thing most kayakers prefer. So fanatical am I about weight I actually weigh it before it goes into a dry bag or backpack. If you know how much your gear weighs and (you are honest about) your own weight, the two combined should come under the max payload of the boat. Skinny boats like the panache will also require you to deal with bulk. No biggie, just carry items in smaller drybags. Feathercraft's excellent website has a gearlist for the Khatsalano, including weights and placement. (www.feathercraft.com) All skinny boats require smaller drybags to some degree. Then there's fresh water...Back channel me if you want one of my trip lists. Rob G PS: Doug Lloyd said he won't get involved in any more camping strings. Let me know if he backchannel's ya. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
