Once I had a discussion with a bunch of whitewater kayakers on the beginning of a river, which had some easy (for me) rapids, and a couple of weirs that I always portage. They were somewhat upset to see that I was going to paddle this river in my canoe without a helmet. I certainly didn't mind that they took all their precautions, since they probably would take far more risks then I would. But afterwards driving in my car on the highway, a small car passed by with three of those kayakers in it and three kayaks on top. The car definitely looked overloaded, the boats not all to well fastened, and they were driving at a speed way over 60 miles per hour (probably 75). They did not have their helmets on, but now I think indeed I should have...?
