Chuck,
I think in this case the CG were saying what they said in deference to
the fact that the fellow slipped below the surface of the water so
quickly and had no chance without his PFD. The other fellow, afterall,
did make it, so maybe a PFD might have been very beneficial. There have
been a number of immersion deaths lately around BC and in most cases a
PFD was not worn. But your point is well taken -- that the message
boaters are getting is not giving enough correct emphasis to immersion
apparel and training issues. I should mention this incident occured in
the early afternoon, not the evening as I implied. Also, you guessed it
good Dr., the two men were not wearing immersion apparel of any
description. Also, I geuss the spray skirt issue is a red herring, as I
don't believe rec boats normally come with a skirt.

Doug

The pattern continues to define itself. Those who die in the
cold-water paddling season are generally outside the "paddling
community". They are beyond the reach of clubs, paddling magazines,
and the many sites on-line that so diligently provide readers with
good advice.

In the PNW the cold water paddling season starts midnight January 1st and
officially ends on midnight December 31st. Options to renew are immediately
extended without further notice. Water temps are typically high 40's to low
50's. If one has a brain, immersion apparel is mandatory, regardless of
summer's balmy skies.

One could only wish to see all of our increasingly popular sport's adherents
wearing the right things, carrying the right gear, but Chuck is correct:
There are some beyond the reach of clubs, mags, etc. People of reason, such
as Chuck, are vital for paddling discussion. It matters little if it's on
Paddlewise or a put in, keep contributing and turn on a few more people.

Just a small voice from the peanut gallery,

Sad to say, but it's not just the paddling community. We had a case like
that around here just today. Three guys walleye fishing in an aluminum
rowboat on the Maumee River near Toledo. Strong current, runoff conditions,
water temps in the 40s at a guess. No PFDs, of course. Immersion gear?
What's that? Can you swim? Well, uh . . .

The boat overturned. One guy made it to shore on his own, and a young guy
fishing along the bank managed with some risk to get to a second guy. Third
guy gone; his jacket found miles downriver, no sign of him.

Hmmmm,
The price of my Dagger Cypress "rec boat" didn't include a spray skirt but
I didn't leave the shop without one.
