Have a project to do for school --- CIO Certification --- outlining the
development of an "expert system" (ES). Essentially, an ES tries to capture
the knowledge of a series of experts and convert it into an interactive tool
to allow less qualified individuals to quickly and directly access the
collective wisdom of the experts on a specific issue or question when the
real folk are not available. Lots of "if this, then this" and some "if this,
this and not this" algorithms in an ES.

Anyway, rather than doing it on selecting paint chips or something, I'm
talking my study group into doing our ES on hypothermia. The result --- at
least in theory --- could be a laptop- or PDA-based interactive checklist ES
on the do's and don't's of treating hypothermia. (It may well just become an
interesting academic issue, but I'm wondering if any PaddleWisers are
familiar with anything similar to this idea in the real world, or if you can
pass along any Web sites that would be good for collecting the info?

Thanks for any ideas. You'll be foot-noted.

Jack Martin

Hi Jack,
think I know what you mean.
About 6 weeks ago, we got a discussion on hypothermia in our german
seakayakforum and Arnd G. give us a link to the "Charité", Berlins biggest
hospital. They got a kind of online therapy book and there is an algorithm
on hypothermia therapy. It is clearly structured ( "hof to threat
hypothermia in all diff. kinds an levels.. " or so) and made for med-people,
but most of it is quite clear understandable for normal persons.

OK, it is german. Maybe Ralph H. or Ulli or someone else got enough
vocabulary to make a translation comment on it.

Hope it helps,
by
Jochen

Joq,

What a great idea! Will you be creating your ES in XML so that it can be
used on various platforms? And will you eventually make this a public
knowledge base?
