this is called, in yoga, a spinal twist. i have found that yoga, more than
any other fitness activity i do, limbers me up for kayaking, specifically
for kayaking. i have a video, kripalu yoga, that i really like. among
other things it lengthens your hamstrings bigtime which is a good thing,
somehow, for my kayaking.

it's good to do that stretch (in caps above) on the water in the boat
too. i do it about every 45 mins. to half-hour.

middle-aged kcd (is 46 middle-aged?) --- hoping Middle Aged Jim gets his
head out of the day hatch, or at least that he left a PowerBar in there if
he can't. :-)

And if you actually do this while paddling it's called torso rotation.

Relating this to another thread...

That question I asked about defining the ultimate "Intro to Kayaking" class
didn't get much interest. Michael Noyes had some very good suggestions but
one thing that it didn't include was some stretching prior to getting in
the boats to start paddling.

Only if you're sure that you're going to die when you're 92.

My boss tells me middle age is when a narrow waist and a broad mind swap
places!
Kevin.
