It's not obvious, but a "sweep" can be used with this technique, depending on your definition. You can generate lift in a number of different paddle orientations. With a paddle floating parallel to the keel and beside the gunwale, you can generate lift from the paddle as (both) blades sweep laterally toward or away from the gunwale (with the loom kept parallel to the keel) when you place pressure on the center of the loom. The effect is subtle but powerful enough to aid rolling. I will often use this technique to "rebound" up from a paddle floating beside the kayak. A Greenland-style paddle is not required but the combination of unfeathered blades and buoyancy makes this technique much easier. As another interesting option, Jay Babina posted on the Qajaq USA forum that he alternates paddle edges while he "pumps" the paddle up-and-down in this orientation to create constant lift for immersed sculling. You can also generate lift with the paddle moving about its longitudinal axis. For example if you place a paddle perpendicular to the kayak with the outboard end in the water and the inboard end close to the foredeck (e.g. an extended low brace), lift is generated when you slide the paddle toward the foredeck (along its length). This technique is used often during recovery from braces and rolls with a Greenland stick.
