Paddlewisers,

Just a little reminder that your kayak could sink if you don't watch out for
your heels or seat grinding through the hull. I have bought two used kayaks,
a plastic one a few years ago and a fiberglass one more recently, and both of
them had seats that were grinding holes through the bottom of the hull. The
fiberglass one was so bad I had to patch it with some epoxy and fiberglass on
the inside of the hull. The problem can be prevented by gluing some foam
between the seat and hull to keep them from sliding against each other.

Last week a paddling buddy, Joe Kramp (Originally from the Chicago area),
told me he almost sank while paddling along the coast here in Southern
California. Without realizing it, his right heel had ground a dime size hole
through the hull. He noticed the cockpit filling with water and made a run
for it back to the harbor. This problem can also be prevented by gluing some
foam where the heels rest on the inside of the hull.

Check your kayaks, foam out, and don't sink!
