A valid US operator's permit is ok for visitor's from the US.  Contact
the FCC (??) or whoever is responsible for radio licensing in the US
for the nearest center where you can get examined.

I'd first try your local Power and Sail Squadron.  In Canada, they handle
instruction and exams for pleasure boaters and I assume they do in the 
US as well.
