I love Tidetool!!! It is by far my favorite application for my PDA. I also take it on my kayak trips, and I plan all my trips using it. Because I really like paddling downhill, I use tide tool to pick weekends when the currents are largest. Also, the new graphing feature in v2.0 is great, especially because it shades the hours of daylight. V2.0 is also much faster than v1, for those who still might be stuck on the old version. The upgrade is worth it because it is free :) Actually, I guess I'll have to jump on my computer soapbox for a couple of minutes... 1. Mary is right that anti-virus software is extremely important. Even more important however is to make sure your current version of Windows and Internet Explorer (if you use it) are up to date. MS has released many critical new security updates in the last couple of months, as part of their Security Revelation in February. Sayeth Bill Gates, "Oh, I had no ideal you guys actually cared about security and bug fixes". This came about as Congress was considering repealing a law that absolves software manufacturers from liability of lost $$$ due to bugs in their software. That sure made MS jump fast... So if you have windows 98SE or better, click: Start -> Windows Update Make sure you download all the "critical updates", which may require several reboots. Why is this important? Because by merely browsing to the wrong website, or receiving the wrong email (without even opening it), a hacker can gain full control of your computer and use it to send out more viruses. Kind of a big deal, IMO... :) 2. Tidetool is GNU licensed software, which makes it the coolest piece of kayaking related software ever written. GNU is the antithesis to MS's corporate greed monopoly. I shudder to think what the software world would be like w/o GNU. www.gnu.org Okay, back to my IT job...
