Hey, congrats to PW'er Gordin Warner of Victoria for his most excellent article about paddling Victoria's inner harbour (sp correct!) in the Summer 2002 issue of Adventure Kayak Magazine. Np fare though, Gordin was a journalist in a previous life not too long ago. Gordin has captured well the kind of sentiments encapsulated by urban-paddler promoters like ralph. Thumbs down to John Dowd's article (Rock the Boat - same issue as above) degrading the fine work done by the members of various coaching schemes (that's the way it came across to me, anyway. Please, no lawsuits). Although he does have a point suggesting skill-set teaching takes too much precedent over the more important aspects of learning seamanship, you can't teach seamanship in the context of a normal course. Not everyone has the money to take a two week wilderness kayaking course. I was involved in pre-CRCA curriculum development, and there is only so much you can convey to new students about the ways of the sea, environmental protection, and the other soft skills. You teach them hard skills, and as much soft-skill technology as you can -- engineering into their adult minds aspects of common sense and judgment; then the whole idea is to spend the rest of your paddling days learning about the ways of sea. Humility is something that is the paddler's responsibility to appreciate. BTW, the latest issue of Sea Kayaker magazine (June 2002) has some excellent writing. The editorial is no yawner, either. A must read. Well done contributors! Nice and tight, guys. Arm-chair paddling was never so good!
