Responding to Doug:

I do mostly day, or overnight trips these days, but for books, the story
line was never as important as the absorbent quality of the paper, and
it's size. Of course it may have to help start a fire too, but being lazy
and sometimes cold and wet, I carry a scraps of old inner tube, and a
Zippo. The Zippo will burn on the on the ground without a finger on it,
in moderate wind. This combination will start damp wood if it's burnable
at all.

Of course if you're really cold, hungry, frustrated, but just happen to
have the book, the tubes, AND the tin of lighter fluid for the Zippo,
things will go very quickly indeed. Lighter fluid will also clean a
fiberglass hull for a tape patch. So will your stoves white gas, if
you're also carrying one, but I don't recommend it for substitute fluid
in the Zippo. More fun than dumping surf, especially if you smoke.
