I absolutely disagree! I have, in the past, had a great deal of trouble
finding VCP hatch covers myself. I spent half a day sending out e-mails and
making phone calls before I finally found one at Northwest Kayaks in
Washington State. Years later I ordered another one from them simply because
I knew they had them and it was easier then trying to search the local
resources for one. Just because I don't need one right now, doesn't mean that
I might not need one in the future sometime.
The question was asked as to where a hatch cover could be found, and Steve
was, in my opinion, offering his services since he has them in stock. I do
not feel that he was in any way soliciting his business. I, for one, am glad
to know of yet another source for VCP hatch covers. I would not have that
information had he responded back channel.
I do not see this as being a whole lot different then people soliciting
the list about information on paddling destinations. As it has been discussed
before on this list, just because I am not planning a trip to the locale
being discussed doesn't mean that I don't enjoy learning a little bit about
the place. I have several trips churning away in the back of my mind that I
would like to do one of these days that I learned about from this list. I
would not have that information if all the discussions were conducted back
channel.
We have gotten a ton of great information on boat design from Matt and
Nick and John. These people design boats. Are they soliciting their business
when they get into these discussions? In a way, they are. So what? They
aren't blatantly trying to sell anything on the list, and I don't feel that
Steve is either. What Steve has done may be on a bit of a fine line by the
strictest application of the list rules, but I do not feel that he crossed
over it. Just my opinion, I guess.
