Since there is so much interest in bears on this list, I will pass along a recommendation that was mentioned in at least one of the prior messages. Stephen Herrero's book "Bear Attacks" is apparently still the authority on this subject, although he may be coming out with another. I decided to research the subject in preparation for a Boy Scout backcountry trip I am helping lead in Glacier Park this summer. These scouts have done serious backcountry hikes in black bear country before, but not grizzly territory. Early in the planning I encountered a great deal of anecdotal misinformation about this subject. Herrero's book is very interesting and readable and contains a wealth of practical suggestions. It is the source of much of the more serious lore you will encounter.
