[Paddlewise] Bears

A bear is a nose that walks on big claws.

They can smell your food in any container. They sure smell you, no matter
what the food situation. Leave your sealed dry bag on an anthill and see
what happens. Only a human could possibly think that bears won't smell
whatever you're carrying.

A couple of years ago a kayak trip in northern Norway was turned into a
survival trip by bears which ripped the kayaks to shreds to get the food
stored in bags-in-bags in the hatches of the boats. Loss of the food was an
annoyance, loss of the boats was almost deadly.

Luck and skill are easily confused. I've known whitewater paddlers who were
convinced that were skilled becuase they never got killed swimming after wet
extiting in Class IV water.

ps I'm taking my youthful offender trip, that some of you know about, to
Glacier Bay this summer, so this bear thing is really serious to me. I've
talked to a couple of animal behaviorists who know bears and they gave me
the first line of this message.
