This reminds me of the story that I was told by a fellow hiker in the ANWR in
Alaska.  We encountered a mother with three cubs (about 15-20 yards away).  Our
only defense was pepper spray.  We did not even attempt to use it.  But
afterwards we heard that our trip leader had used the pepper spray before on
another trip, sprayed it against the wind and therefore sprayed himself.  That
hurt him so much that he started screaming like creazy, which scared away the
bear!!
